The ice-cold construction highlight Frostpunk is getting an ambitious successor: Frostpunk 2 is set 30 years after its predecessor, should build on the strengths of the first part and become a much more extensive game. Frostpunk 2 has been announced for PC and has no date yet.
With Frostpunk, 11 bit Studios landed a real surprise hit three years ago: The mix of building strategy and end-time survival game shone with an excellent design, great atmosphere and tricky decisions that got under your skin. After several DLCs and console implementations, the brand was quiet until today: 11 bit Studios has announced the official successor Frostpunk 2. According to the first teaser trailer, the game will initially be released for PC, via Steam, GOG and the Epic Store.
Struggle for survival between ice and oil
Unfortunately, much is not yet known and real screenshots have not yet been published. It is still uncertain whether the build-up gameplay will be based on the first part or whether it will go in a slightly different direction this time. At least there is first information about the story: Frostpunk 2 takes place 30 years after the first part, in which the last remnants of humanity had to make their way through an apocalyptic, endless blizzard. This time you are leading a metropolis of the future in which your population is still trying to fight against the hostile temperatures.
The age of coal is over, the most important raw material from the previous game is now being replaced by crude oil, from which many hope for new chances of survival. You have to juggle different camps and interest groups, protect your city against external threats and try to get the population to make difficult decisions.
More than just a sequel
According to Jakub Stokalski, the co-director of Frostpunk 2, the game should go far beyond the concept of the first part. The team was also enlarged:
“With a growing team of almost 70 people, we can focus on all aspects of the game: scope, production value, quality of the UE, but we want to do more than just a sequel. Players have a multitude of choices expect and shape freedom, society and city the way they want – and they bear the consequences for this. Frostpunk 2 builds on the conflicts of its predecessor: survival versus values, life versus arctic frost. Most important, however, is that it is a new one Level present in many aspects of the game, be it in politics, society or technological progress: the conflict between people and their nature “.
Frostpunk 2 has no release date yet, nothing is known about console conversions either. To celebrate the announcement, the first Frostpunk will be playable for free on Steam from August 12th to 16th.
