Battlefield 2042 will be even bigger than its predecessor, especially in terms of the number of players per game. Never before have there been so many soldiers who could go into battle against each other on a map.
How many players can play against each other? There are a few crucial factors here. The numbers vary depending on the mode, and the platform you play on is also decisive.
In general: Battlefield 2042 offers the highest possible number of players per game to date. Up to 128 players are possible, so 64 against 64 players can play.
However, this is only the case on the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X | S. According to DICE, the PS4 and Xbox One are technically too limited and have to compromise on the number of players in addition to some other differences.
Maximum number of players for All-Out Warfare, Hazard Zone and Battlefield Portal
Battlefield 2042 has three major categories and four modes into which the multiplayer is divided. This means All-Out Warfare, Hazard Zone and Battlefield Portal.
This is how it looks in All-out Warfare: All-Out Warfare includes 2 modes, Breakthrough and Conquest. 128 players per game are possible here, older consoles only support a maximum of 64 players.
This is how it looks with Hazard Zone: In Hazard Zone mode, for example, there are no 128 players per game, but a maximum of 32. This is because the mode is more like an Escape from Tarkov or Hunt: Showdown and numerous NPC enemies are on the map. Here is a summary of Hazard Zone and how the mode works.
Here, too, there are restrictions for the older consoles. Instead of 32 players, only 24 players are possible. The reason is another limitation for Xbox One and PS4: The maps are much smaller than on the PC or the newer consoles.
This is what it looks like in Battlefield Portal: Since the players in Battlefield Portal can create their own games and, thanks to numerous tools, modify almost everything, 128 players per game are also possible here. Again, this only applies to the PS5, Xbox Series X | S and the PC.
Highest number of players per game in the Battlefield franchise
How has it been so far? The latest Battlefield offshoots appeared for the PS4 and Xbox One. Due to the technical restrictions, the number of players was limited to a maximum of 64 players per game, so a maximum of 32 teams could play against 32 players.
Here is a short list:
- Battlefield 3: 64 players on PC, 24 players on Xbox 360 and PS3
- Battlefield 4: 64 players on PC, Xbox One and PS4, 24 players on Xbox 360 and PS3
- Battlefield Hardline: 64 players on PC, Xbox One and PS4, 24 players on Xbox 360 and PS3
- Battlefield 1: 64 players on PC, Xbox One and PS4
- Battlefield V: 64 players on PC, Xbox One and PS4
So 64 players were a long tradition. Again and again, however, compromises had to be made with the consoles, as these are traditionally technically weaker than modern gaming PCs.
Since the Xbox One and PS4, the numbers have at least equalized and the PS5 and Xbox Series now actually manage the 128 players.
